Kalle Rovanpera, world rally champion, has announced his entry into the world of circuit racing. This notable driver, known for winning the World Rally Championship (WRC) title twice, will compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux series.
Rovanpera's decision comes after expressing his desire to experience different disciplines of motorsport. Along with his co-driver Jonne Halttunen, they will face a partial WRC campaign this year, starting with the Rally Sweden next week. At 23 years old, Rovanpera had expressed last year his interest in testing his skills in other racing categories, including driving a GT car.
The Finn, previously linked to a possible participation in this year's Fuji 24 Hours, now confirms his participation in a partial program in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux. Rovanpera will drive a 911 GT3 Cup in four of the six rounds, backed by the Red Ant Racing team, led by Marc Goosens, a veteran of racing and winner in different categories.
This season in rally is really exciting, and with a partial schedule, I have more time to dedicate to circuit racing, something I've wanted to do for a long time. It's a new and exciting challenge for me. Although it will be a big challenge to compete against young and experienced drivers, I am eager to learn and improve my skills in this new discipline. I don't feel a lot of pressure; rather, I want to see how I perform and adapt quickly to compete at the best level.
Marc Goosens from Red Ant Racing shares his enthusiasm: "We are very happy with Kalle's arrival at our team. After talking with his engineering team in rally, I understand that, in addition to his talent, Kalle has the right work ethic to build success in a professional manner. I am very motivated to support Kalle in his transition to circuit racing."
The calendar of the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux includes six rounds. Two of them coincide with WRC rounds: the Rally of Portugal and the Rally of Finland. Although Rovanpera's WRC program for 2024 beyond the Sweden round has not yet been announced, he is expected to participate in the debut of Latvia in the WRC in July.
