Rally Islas Canarias joins WRC in 2025

The Rally Islas Canarias will join the World Rally Championship calendar in 2025, marking an exciting return to Spain. This announcement, made on Monday, March 11, has raised great expectations among rally fans. This event, which started in 1977, has been part of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) since 2016. In 2025, the Rally Islas Canarias will be held exclusively in Gran Canaria, and for its 50th edition in 2026, it will expand to include other islands in the archipelago.

The news was announced at a press conference in Gran Canaria, attended by notable figures such as the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, and the member of the FIA World Motor Sport Council and President of the Real Federación Española de Automovilismo (RFEDA), Manuel Aviñó.

Germán Morales, CEO of Club Deportivo Todo Sport, organizers of the event, shared his enthusiasm for this achievement, the result of years of effort and dedication. Jona Siebel, Managing Director of WRC Promoter, also expressed his satisfaction at including Spain again in the WRC calendar and the effectiveness of his strategy to provide a pathway for ERC events to WRC. The shift from ERC to WRC not only elevates the rally's profile but is also expected to attract thousands of fans to this popular European tourist destination. The combination of the dynamism of the rally stages with the opportunity to enjoy a summer vacation promises to be an unforgettable experience.

The rally is characterized by its smooth and winding asphalt surfaces, which traverse the volcanic inland terrains of the islands. Although the Canary coasts are famous for their ideal beach weather all year round, drivers must be prepared for variable weather conditions in the mountains. The WRC last visited Spain in 2022, with the rally based in the Catalonian beachside resort of Salou. Now, with the anticipated approval of the World Motor Sport Council, the Rally Islas Canarias is preparing to be the new stage for this exciting championship.
