Porsche has confirmed its commitment to Formula E until the end of the Gen4 regulations, ensuring its participation in the electric vehicle championship until 2030.
The German brand has been involved in Formula E since the 2019-20 season, achieving seven victories in the Gen2 and Gen3 eras. Although the factory team has reached its best result with a fourth place in the team standings, Porsche's powertrain helped Jake Dennis win the drivers' title last season with the customer team Andretti.
Before the double-header event in Shanghai this weekend, Porsche announced its decision to remain in the championship for another six seasons. Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, explained to Motorsport.com that the decision-making process was meticulous but not complicated. "For us, it was always clear that it’s a long-term engagement," Laudenbach stated.
Mutual Benefit with Porsche
Porsche joins Nissan and Jaguar as the manufacturers that have confirmed their continuity in Formula E under the Gen4 rules. This continuity is valuable for Formula E, as organizers seek to retain current manufacturers and attract new ones for the next regulation cycle.
Porsche's history and legacy, which span decades across multiple disciplines, are valuable for Formula E as it seeks to expand after a decade since its founding. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, commented that Porsche's participation sends a message to the world that this is a serious sport.
The next major rule change will be introduced for the 2026-27 season, with a Gen3 Evo car to be used over the next two campaigns. For Porsche, the opportunity to innovate in electric technology was a key element to remain in the championship. "Developing technology and processes is fundamental," added Laudenbach. "There is a strong relationship between road cars and racing, and if there were no technical benefit, we wouldn't do it."
