This weekend, the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio marks a new era in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with the anticipated debut of the hybrid system.

Technical Innovation

  • Compact and Efficient: The hybrid unit, which fits in a space the size of a milk crate, is located between the combustion engine and the gearbox.
  • Generation and Storage: During regeneration, the MGU (Motor Generator Unit) generates power that is stored in the ESS (Energy Storage System). This additional power can be used on demand by the driver.
  • Regeneration Options: Teams can choose between automatic options (via braking or throttle position) and manual options (via steering wheel paddles or buttons).

Power Deployment

  • Deployment Button: The power is activated through a button similar to the existing "push to pass" system.
  • Usage Limits: Usage limits will be set on a per-lap basis.
  • System Combination: On road and street circuits, the hybrid assist can be combined with "push to pass," providing an increase of over 120 hp. This is the first power increase over 800 hp in two decades.

  • Chevrolet/Ilmor: Development of the MGU and assembly of the combined package for the teams.

Sustainability and Safety

  • Sustainable Energy: Use of Shell’s 100% renewable race fuel, renewable diesel for team transporters, and Firestone's sustainable race tires made from guayule rubber.
  • Low Voltage Components: The hybrid unit operates at low voltage (48V).
  • Quick Restart: If a car stalls on a circuit, the driver can quickly restart it using the hybrid unit without needing assistance from the safety team.
