On the debut street track in Detroit, a temporary 1.654-mile, nine-turn circuit, Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor of Acura took the victory in a 100-minute race full of incidents. The competition had five yellow flag interruptions.
Mathieu Jaminet of Porsche was overtaken by Taylor in the last 25 minutes of the race, thus securing the victory for the WTR-Andretti team in the GTP category. Seb Priaulx and Laurin Heinrich of AO Racing won in the GTD Pro category.
Porsche Penske Motorsport dominated qualifying, with Nick Tandy and Dane Cameron in the top two spots. However, the race became chaotic from the start. Albuquerque overtook Cameron in the first corner, while Bourdais also passed the Porsche driver.
A radio issue did not prevent Tandy from leading the first part of the race. However, a braking error at turn 3 led to a collision and subsequent penalty, leaving Albuquerque in first place. Bourdais and Cameron followed suit but had problems in the pits, allowing Taylor to extend his lead.
Jaminet regained the lead after a caution period, but a series of aggressive maneuvers and another yellow flag due to a crash left Taylor with the opportunity to reclaim first place. He achieved this with an overtaking move at turn 3, thus securing the victory.
GTD Pro: Problems for Corvette, Porsche Prevails over Lexus
The GTD Pro category was also intense. Chevrolet’s Corvettes led the qualifying, but an alternator issue forced Antonio García to retire early. The competition among the leaders resulted in a crash between Barnicoat and Catsburg, leaving Heinrich with the lead.
