BMW surprised in the initial qualifying session of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, leading the table with a time of 3m24.465s recorded by Dries Vanthoor in the M Hybrid V8 #15. This lap displaced Sébastien Bourdais in the Cadillac #3 by 0.177s, leaving Antonio Fuoco in the Ferrari #50 in third position.
Wednesday's qualifying was a 60-minute session aimed at selecting the eight cars from each category for Thursday's final session. Although Porsche, Ferrari, and Toyota were the favorites, BMW dominated the first session, being two seconds faster than Brendon Hartley's previous best time.
The session ended abruptly due to an error by Kamui Kobayashi in the Toyota GR010 HYBRID #7, who went off the track and got stuck in the gravel. The red flag was waved with less than three minutes remaining, consolidating BMW's position at the top.
Kobayashi managed to secure the fourth position for Toyota with a time of 3m24.754s. The Alpine A424 #35 of Paul-Loup Chatin finished in fifth place, while Alex Lynn ensured that both Ganassi Cadillacs made it to the final by securing the sixth position.
The Ferrari #51 of Alessandro Pier Guidi and the Porsche #6 Penske of Kevin Estre completed the top eight. The Jota #12 of Callum Ilott and the second Alpine of Nicolas Lapierre narrowly missed out on Q2.
In LMP2, Malthe Jakobsen of Cool Racing led with a time of 3m46.530s, followed by Louis Deletraz of AO by TF Pro-Am and Ben Hanley of United Autosports. Mathias Beche in the ORECA #65 of Panis Racing occupied the fourth position.
In LMGT3, Ben Barker in the Ford Mustang GT3 #77 led with 3m55.243s, followed by Frederik Schandorff in the McLaren #70 Inception and Daniel Juncadella in the Corvette Z06 GT3 #82 of TF Sport. Frank Perera in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 #60 and Klaus Bachler in the Porsche 911 GT3 R #92 completed the top five.
The surprises and changes in positions promise an exciting final qualifying session on Thursday, where teams will fight for the pole position for the iconic endurance race.
